about
Once upon a night so dreary, I sat alone in my suites in the East wing of The Last Day's Bordello on my night off, brooding. The air from the woods was green and fresh; it stirred and numbed my tired mind all at once.
Darkness, nevertheless, was inside me.
Picking up Aisling, my acoustic lute, I let the images from my own heart wash over me. The blend of hopelessness and despair, regret and pain was eclipsed only by the slightest whisper from the aethers.
Angels. Even in the darkness, images of the past arose. The church of childhood and its stone gargoyles and saints and angels forever haunt and give hope. Even now.
Sometimes, no matter how far you fall, how much pain you suffer, it can amaze that you may still fall farther and hurt more and more.
What's left but to relent, give yourself to the fall, and let yourself at least fall for something, or someone you love.
What else is there to do? Write a song, I guess.
sincerely,
The Minstrel Hicks Archibald, Esq.
Post Script: I penned another verse. With more regret, redemption. But it seemed too personal. My apologies if this ends on a very sad note. I hope you find something in it...anything at all.
lyrics
HALLELUJAH BABY BABYLON
I smelled the ash in the air today
Burning oil lamps lit my way
I hear the growl beneath the streets
The beast has finally come to feast
I'm drunk on opium and wine
I've fallen down a thousand times
I wander lost and all alone
But inside my demons moan
For more…
Listen up and hear the angel's cry
Listen up and I will tell you why
Listen up and hear the fallen sing
Hallelujah baby, here I come…down
I used wear the finest things
I used to dance at balls with kings
But I have fallen down again
And in this gutter I'll remain
The ghosts of ships they pass me by
Empty faces and silent cries
Grey stone towers toll their bells
As I am crawling down to hell
For you…
Listen up and hear the angel's cry
Listen up and I will tell you why
Listen up and hear the fallen sing
Hallelujah baby, here I come…
Listen up and hear the angel's cry
Listen up and I will tell you why
Listen up and hear the fallen sing
Hallelujah baby, Babylon!
